The Creation Myth (創世の物語, Sōsei no Monogatari) is a recurring tale in the Suikoden series. It describes how the world came into being in mythological terms.

Information

The tale purports to describe the beginning of the world, formed alongside the creation of the 27 True Runes. The story speaks of the battle between "Sword" and "Shield", commonly interpreted to represent "Chaos" and "Order" and how this battle led to the creation of the True Runes and the beginning of the world as its inhabitants know it.

Often, the tale appears to be focused more on the origin of the 27 True Runes themselves than the world they reside in.

Details

Though translations vary slightly, the below serves as a common distillation of the tale.

In the beginning there was Darkness, and Darkness lived for eons in a rift in time.
Eventually, having suffered in solitude for so long, Darkness shed a Tear.
From this Tear were born two brothers: Sword and Shield.
Sword bragged that he could cut anything to pieces, and to that Shield answered that nothing could ever harm him.
And so, the two fought.
The battle raged for seven days and seven nights.
Sword tore apart Shield.
Shield shattered Sword.
The fragments of Sword rained down and formed the sky.
The fragments of Shield rained down and formed the earth.
The sparks from their battle became the stars.
And the 27 jewels that adorned Sword and Shield were turned into the 27 True Runes, and so the world began.
